Shipping cars to Puerto Rico, explained in plain language

Shipping cars to Puerto Rico is a three-part trip. A truck takes the car from your address to a mainland port. A vessel carries it across the ocean to the island. Then the car is released and delivered to an address in Puerto Rico.

Each part has its own schedule and its own paperwork, and they have to line up. That coordination is our job. You give us two addresses and a set of keys, and we tell you exactly what we need from you at every stage.

New to the process? Our Puerto Rico autoshipping page covers the service from the beginning.

What is included

  • Pickup from Point A: your home, office or dealership
  • Transport to the departure port and check-in
  • Ocean transport to Puerto Rico
  • Delivery to Point B, your destination on the island
  • Guidance on every document you need
  • Updates by phone in English and Spanish, 24/7

How cars are loaded and carried on the ship

Most owners never see this part of the trip, so here is what happens to your car between the port gate and the island.

We tell you which loading method applies to your shipment when you book.

  • Check-in. The car's condition and fuel level are recorded, and its documents are matched to the booking.
  • Loading. Cars are usually driven up a ramp onto the vessel, a method called roll-on/roll-off. Some routes use enclosed containers instead.
  • Securing. Each car is parked on a vehicle deck and strapped down so it cannot move during the crossing.
  • Unloading. In Puerto Rico the cars are driven off the vessel and held at the port until they are cleared for release.

Shipping one car or several

  • One car

The most common shipment: one booking, one pickup and one delivery on the island.

  • Two cars for one household

Moving with more than one car? We schedule them together when possible, so they arrive around the same time.

  • Several cars for a business

Dealers and fleet owners can send multiple units. Tell us how many and where each one is, and we build one plan for all of them.

Sending a car as a gift to family in Puerto Rico

A car is one of the most useful gifts you can send to the island, whether it is for a parent who needs reliable transportation, a son or daughter starting a new job, or a graduate.

  • Give us the name and phone number of the person receiving the car, so we can arrange delivery with them directly.
  • Decide whose name will be on the title before the car ships. We explain what the receiver needs in each case.
  • Agree on who will pay the excise tax (arbitrios). Hacienda collects it before the car is released.
  • Planning it for the holidays or a birthday? Book early, because sailings fill up at busy times of year.

Plan your shipment: what to do and when

  1. As soon as you know your dates

Call us with the car's details and both addresses. If the car is financed or leased, ask your lender for an authorization letter now.

  2. The week before pickup

Gather your title, registration and photo ID. Wash the car and take dated photos of every side.

  3. The day before

Empty the cabin and trunk, bring the fuel down to a quarter tank or less and turn off the alarm.

  4. Pickup day

Walk around the car with the driver, review the inspection report together and hand over the keys.

  5. Arrival on the island

We let you know when the car arrives. Once the excise tax is paid and the car is released, it is delivered to Point B.

Six mistakes that delay a car shipment

  • Leaving belongings insideCarriers can refuse a car that has personal items in it. Ship it empty.
  • Forgetting the lender's letterA financed or leased car cannot ship without written authorization from the lienholder.
  • A title in someone else's nameIf the owner on the title is not the person shipping the car, tell us first. Extra authorization is usually needed.
  • Too much fuelPorts limit how much fuel a car can carry. Keep it at a quarter tank or less.
  • Nobody to receive the carMake sure you or someone you trust can be reached when the car is ready for delivery.
  • Booking at the last minuteSailings fill up in busy seasons. Reserve as early as you can.

Questions about shipping cars to Puerto Rico

Can I ship more than one car to Puerto Rico at the same time?

Yes. Tell us how many cars you have and where each one is. We schedule them together when possible. Each car needs its own title, registration and excise tax payment.

How are cars loaded onto the ship?

Cars are usually driven up a ramp onto the vessel and strapped down on a vehicle deck, a method called roll-on/roll-off. Some routes use enclosed containers instead. We tell you which applies to your shipment.

Is shipping a car to Puerto Rico an international shipment?

No. Puerto Rico is a U.S. territory, so the car does not pass through foreign customs. Puerto Rico does charge its own excise tax on vehicles arriving on the island, which is paid to Hacienda before release.
